Aadhaar Card : Know 10 Very important Things About Unique Identity Number (UID Number)

The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) has said that Aadhaar - the 12-digit identity number based on the biometrics data of an individual - can be obtained at any age.
The government has announced December 31, 2017 as the deadline to link Aadhaar card or UID with PPF

Aadhaar card, the identity card containing the 12-digit UID or Unique Identity Number, is now essential for carrying out a number of tasks. Aadhaar card has to be linked with small savings schemes like Kisan Vikas Patra and PPF (Public Provident Fund) to bank accounts. Applying for a PAN (Permanent Account Number) card also requires quoting of Aadhaar. The government has announced a December 31, 2017 deadline for linking Aadhaar card or UID (Unique Identity Number) with PPF, NSC (National Savings Certificate), PPF, Kisan Vikas Patra and Post Office accounts, among others.

Did you know that there is no age limit applicable to obtain Aadhaar? Aadhaar, the identity number based on the biometrics data of an individual and issued by the UIDAI or Unique Identification Authority of India, can be obtained at any age. This was said by the UIDAI on microblogging site Twitter.

Know important 10 things about UID or Aadhaar card number :

1) One can enrol for Aadhaar at any age including infants. Once attaining five years of age, the biometrics details - through iris and fingertips scans - of the children can be updated on Aadhaar. "When your child reaches the age of 5, it is important to get his/her biometrics updated to Aadhaar. Not doing so will make the Bal Aadhaar invalid," the UIDAI said.

2) Aadhaar, the UIDAI has said, is "equally important for the elderly".

3) The Aadhaar enrolment system - provided by the UIDAI, the issuer of Unique Identity Number and Aadhaar card - also provisions for enrolment of individuals with "ill-defined fingerprints or missing biometrics".

4) Also, persons suffering from eye ailments -cataract, retina damage or partial/complete blindness - can also enrol for Aadhaar card, the UIDAI has said.

5) "Aadhaar enrolment can be done even if someone in a family doesn't have individual valid docs," the Authority said in another Tweet.

Who can get Aadhaar card ?

6) Aadhaar card or UID is available to residents only. Therefore, NRIs (non-resident Indians) and OCIs (Overseas Citizens of India) are not eligible for Aadhaar card.

What is Digital Aadhaar card ?

7) The UIDAI also enables Aadhaar card holders to download a digital copy of the biometrics-based identity card. "Please ensure that you delete the local copy of your Aadhaar downloaded on any public machine to avoid its misuse," the UIDAI advised Aadhaar holders.

8) Aadhaar is to be mandatorily quoted for a number of important tasks. These range from investment in PPF (Public Provident Fund), NSC (National Savings Certificate) to bank account to applying for a PAN (Permanent Account Number) and filing income tax return (ITR). The UIDAI has advised Aadhaar card holders not to share their Aadhaar number or Aadhaar OTP with anyone.

Is Aadhaar card linking safe and secure ?

9) The UIDAI has time and again vouched for the security of Aadhaar card. "Linking of your Aadhaar with your bank account is safe and secure and the government takes all possible measures to ensure it," it said.

10) The UIDAI has provided several tools on its portal - uidai.gov.in - for the general public. Some of these online tools enable Aadhaar holders to enroll for Aadhaar card, update Aadhaar card, check Aadhaar enrolment status, download a digital copy of Aadhaar card and receive Aadhaar number on the registered mobile number. Aadhaar holders can also lock/unlock the biometrics-related information associated with Aadhaar.

Finance Minister Arun Jaitley to launch Google payment app 'Tez' on Monday,18 Sep. 2017

"FM Shri @arunjaitley to launch the Google Digital Payment app 'TEZ' on Monday, 18th September, 2017 in the national capital," the Finance Ministry confirmed in a tweet on Saturday.

Tech giant Google will launch its payment app 'TEZ' on Monday as it seeks to cash in on the growing digital payment segment in the country.

The news as first reported on ‘THE KEN’, Indian business blog and the app will likely be launched at a press conference on 18 September in New Delhi by Caesar Sengupta, vice-president, Next Billion Users, Google.

The app is probably going to feature a digital wallet where customers can store money and has been integrated with India’s Unified Payments Interface (UPI) to allow for money transfers at no cost, and an easy checkout system. It’s likewise said to support credit cards and third-party wallets like Paytm and Mobikwik.

It will be available both on the desktop, as a Chrome widget, and as an app on Google’s Play Store or will be pre-installed on the operating system and introduced as part of future updates to the operating system.

Tez is largely fashioned on the Google’s global product—Android Pay, earlier called Google Wallet.

Looking at India’s growing digital commerce and payments space as a huge source of revenue, the effort bodes well for Google enabling the search giant to dive deep into payments.

Right now India’s digital payments ecosystem is intensifying; with a 57% market share, Alibaba-backed Paytm presently dominates in a market swarmed with various mobile wallet players like MobiKwik, FreeCharge, Tencent-backed Hike Messenger, Oxygen, Citrus Pay, ItzCash, Phone Pe, PayU, Jio Money and Ola Money.

Global companies like Truecaller and Uber have also entered the payment space in India while Facebook-owned WhatsApp is working to grab a hold on India’s growing mobile wallet space.

In July, the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) had said Google had completed the testing of its UPI payment service and was awaiting Reserve Bank of India's approval to launch its service in the country.

Google has also sent out invites for the event to "share details on the launch of a new product developed grounds up for India".

"Tez" (meaning fast in Hindi) may work like Android Pay.

UPI is a payment system launched by the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) and regulated by the Reserve Bank of India which facilitates the instant fund transfer between two bank accounts on the mobile platform.

"We expect that by December, the number will actually go up to five million PoS, which means that the infrastructure for digital payments is going to grow three times in the short span of one year," MeitY Secretary Aruna Sundararajan said.

Link your Mobile number to Aadhar Number  by February 2018 otherwise your SIM card will be deactivated.

The Central government has given a notice saying that all SIM cards have to be linked to Aadhar cards before 2018, otherwise phones could be deactivated, ANI reported. The Supreme Court passed an order on Saturday after it heard the Lok Niti foundation case, which is about Sim card and Aadhar linkage.
The government also said that it is being done to stop terrorists, fraudsters and criminals from using SIM card numbers in the name of innocent citizens. The telecom companies have been directed to get the message across to subscribers through email, text and ads. A bench consisting of former Chief Justice JS Khehar and Justice N V Ramana said that the verification of pre-paid mobile users should be done within a year.
Lok Niti Foundation had asked the apex court to intervene to address the unauthorised use of SIM cards in cell phones.

There can be two scenarios here. You are linking it for the first time. You have changed your phone number and want to update your Aadhaar data by replacing the old number with the new one. Here we provide you steps on how to link your SIM card with Aaadhar.

Linking your mobile number to Aadhaar for the first time:

This needs to be done offline. Most online transactions are OTP (one-time-password) authenticated i.e. the OTP is sent to the registered mobile number. Obviously, online authentication is not possible as you are linking your number for the first time. To do this offline you need to follow these steps:
Visit your nearest Aadhaar centre to get the Aadhar Update/Correction Form or download it from the UIDAI website.

Click here to download the form : UpdateRequestFormV2.pdf

Fill out the form correctly; submit it to the concerned person at the centre and mention on the form that only mobile number is to be updated.
While submitting the update form, along with a photocopy of your Aadhaar card you also need to provide a photocopy of an Identity proof document such as PAN Card, Passport, Voter ID card.
Following the submission, your biometrics will be verified at the enrollment centre. Your thumb impression will be verified.
While applying for Aadhaar your biometrics were recorded and to authenticate the changes, they are verified. After verifying the biometrics, you will be given an acknowledgement slip. Usually, it takes 2-5 working days for the updation to happen but as per the UIDAI helpline, the turnaround time for the updation is 10 days.

 How to update mobile number:

Updating the mobile number can be done online, but make sure that your existing number linked to your Aadhaar, is functional and handy before you go for the online update. This is because the OTP to authenticate the updation would be sent to your existing number. You will be able link your new mobile number with Aadhaar only after submitting the OTP sent on your old number.
On the UIDAI website, there's an option under the Aadhaar Update tab that will redirect the user to the Aadhar Self-Service portal.
Enter your Aadhar number, and the Captcha text and request for OTP.
The OTP will be sent to your existing mobile number, and after submitting it you'll be redirected to a new page, where you can update the desired details.
Under 'Select field(s) to update', select 'Mobile Number'
Now enter your new mobile number that you want to record in the database and submit.
